Skinwalkers can come in all shapes and sizes, but they ted to be canines for whatever reason. Skinwalkers are the possessed carcasses of animals. Usually a demon will attack an animal (especially one with weaker wills), and after it’s death posses it’s body. From that points on, they will use it to hunt prey, until the carcass is physically unable to continue on, at which point the demon will abandon it and find a new host.

Skinwalkers thrive from fear and inaction. If you stand your ground and pose enough of a threat, or at least perceived threat, it will usually leave you alone.

The most effective way to ‘exorcise’ a skinwalker is by rendering a host physically unable to move by brute force. Machetes are very useful.
